Urban, highway and light-rail drainage design

Integrating complex drainage systems in an urban environment is a challenge in terms of hydraulic performance but also with consideration to the existing built environment and the aesthetics.  GKCC has taken an innovative role is designing drainage structures that perform important stormwater functions and are attractive additions to an urban setting.

Recent work by GKCC has included theT-REX drainage system.  Intakes for the T-REX drainage system were architecturally graded ponds that provided open space and water quality control.  The tunnel outfall to the South Platte River provides an aesthetic transition to the river channel.

The Broadway / Blake intake structure was designed with the aesthetic context of an urban plaza.  Highly functional as an intake structure, the inlet is unobtrusive and let’s park activities take place safely – even in the event of flash flooding.

GKCC has extensive design experience with highway and light-rail drainage systems.  We are thoroughly familiar with FHWA guidance documents for drainage design as well as various local standards.  We gained significant experience in drainage design for light-rail on the T-REX project.
