Lower Lena Gulch Project

Project Description

The Urban Drainage and Flood Control District is updating the Drainageway Planning Study and Flood Hazard Area Delineation within the lower portion of Lena Gulch downstream of Maple Grove Reservoir to the confluence with the Clear Creek. The new studies and maps produced by this work will provide tools that can be used by the project sponsors for basin-wide planning and floodplain management. The original studies date from 1975 and the new study will address the numerous changes and improvements that have occurred in the lower portion of the Lena Gulch basin since that time. It will also develop a plan for future development in the basin.

To update the basin hydrology (current conditions and estimated future conditions) for Lower Lena Gulch, the project team will gather and compile new data, conduct field investigations, and obtain public input. This information will be used to develop new hydrologic models and evaluate alternative concepts for drainage and flood control within the basin. A preferred alternative will then be selected from these concepts or as the best combination of several concepts.

Also, new estimates of flood hazard will be completed using the updates basin hydrology and new hydraulic analysis of the Lower Lena Gulch floodplain. The study will develop planning concepts for future improvements to the stream channel.

Study Progress

The Lower Lena Gulch study commenced September 13, 2006. At this point in the study, new hydrology has been developed for the entire basin using the EPA Storm Water Management Model. A new delineation of the flood hazard area below Maple Grove Reservoir was made. The next phase of the project identified alternatives for solving drainage problems, stream erosion, and water quality problems in the lower Lena Gulch corridor. A public meeting was held in March 2007 that presented the new flood hazard information and improvement alternatives. A copy of the Phase A report “Alternatives Evaluation Report” can be downloaded from this web site.

The alternatives are currently being evaluated by City of Wheat Ridge and Urban Drainage and Flood Control District. A preferred alternative will be selected in June 2007. Copies of the meeting minutes from the project progress meetings can be found on the meetings page.
